i have ver very thick hair and its wavy and poofy. i straighten it every single day because i would never leave the house with it looking like it does when i let it air dry. i like the look of nice curly hair but when i curl my hair it is really really poofy because my hair is so thick and also i see people who have nice wavy hair and they say they "scrunch" it like with gel but when i try it my hair looks so poofy and absolutely rediculous(sp.?) is there any ways that you guys know of to make either of the styles work and look better?
thank you ( =
Thick hair....curling and "scrunching"?
buy those soft curlers and sleep in them. it is soooo easy and you save so much time in the morning. you just take them out and only brush the top of your hair otherwise you brush right through the curls. then use hairspray, not mousse. ive found that a great brand of hairspray is matrix hairspray. and for looser, messier curls, you separate each curl in two. it is a more casual, less shirley temple look.
then for waves, sleep in braids. (the number depending on how wavy you want your hair. i would probably recommend about eight or so) then you just take them out in the morning and just brush the top of your hair. you can use hairspray, but i usually dont need it, but then again, my hair holds waves really well......
and if you shower in the morning, scrunch your hair with mousse and it looks pretty good but might get a little frizzy.
and to get a curled, more voluminous ponytail, here is what you do. just put your hair up in a ponytail before bed, then put anywhere from 1-3 curlers in it (depending on how much hair you have and how thick it is and how big you want your curls) then when you wake up, roll them right out, and re-tie your ponytail holder and brush the top of your head, without brushing down the curls. you can put hairspray in if you want, but you might not even need to for just a ponytail.
and as for just regular hairstyles, i would try sidebangs or whispy bangs instead of thick ones......dont know ....
you can also do buns, because they are pretty in, or low pigtails, but you might be a little old for them, but my sister in college looks cute in them so i dont know.....
and side ponytails are cute and sporty.
as for hairbands, very cute and in!!!
u could wear your hair half-up, leaving your bangs down.....
good luck!! hope i helped!!!

Thick hair....curling and "scrunching"?
I have VERY curly hair. I only straighten it once a week so I don't damage the hair. When I leave my hair curly, I use the sun silk 24/7 cream for anti-frizz and smoothing cream. I wrap my hair around my finger in SMALL ringlets and let it dry that way. It takes a LONG time, about as much time as straightening, but it's MUCH less damaging. I let the ringlets air dry or I use a blow dryer on low with a diffuser to dry it faster if I am going somewhere. I end up with really cute mini ringlets, and no pouffiness!
For a more wavy, less curly look, I recommend following Karen's instructions on sleeping in braids. Straight haired people do that to make waves, curly haired people do that to straighten out their curls!
Also, do not comb or brush your hair.
Curly hair needs to be "finger combed" the first time you do this it will take forever and you might need a comb to detangle at first. Keep up with it, finger comb wet in the shower every day and it won't tangle again. Brushes and combs damage curly hair cuticles (giving it more tendency towards poufiness). I get so many more compliments now that I don't "brush" my hair! I read this in Curly Girl book.
I hope that works for you! Most of all, you just need to experiment with your own hair, it took me a long time to figure this out!
Thick hair....curling and "scrunching"?
This is how you would crimp ur hair
Step-by-step instructions:
* Wash your hair with a mild shampoo and use a light conditioner to add shine to your hair.
* Rinse your hair with cold water to enclose the shaft.
* Dry your hair with the help of a towel. Use a wide toothed comb to remove tangles from your hair.
* Apply a heat protection spray to avoid damage to your hair caused due to heat from the crimping machine or blow dryer.
* Set your blow dryer to the coolest setting and then dry your hair with the dryer.
* Once you hair dries completely use the crimping machine. Use the machine on small section of your hair.
* Do not apply the crimping machine for long on a particular section. Excessive heat of the crimping machine may damage your hair.
Hair Crimping Tips:
* Do not crimp your hair frequently as it may damage your hair.
* When you crimp your hair make it sure that your hair are completely dry. Do not use the crimp machine if your hair is even slightly wet.
* To prevent breakage of hair stop crimping just above the ends of your hair
- To style your hair using the curly-girl method you will need gel and conditioner at the minimum. Some less useful, but still nice stuff would be a blowdryer, a diffuser (reduces frizz in curly/wavy hair when used with dryer), and a microfiber hair turban (to dry wet hair while sleeping or in the morning).
-The main philosophy of the curly-girl method is to not use shampoo. This may sound unhygenic but it has actually made my hair less oily and dandruffy. Most shampoos contain some of the same chemicals found in laundry detergent (aka sulfates). They dry out curly hair. Also you shouldn't brush your curly hair dry because it damages the hair and makes it poof.
- Massaging of the scalp with conditioner to remove dirt is all that is needed. It will clean everything but super clingy silicones. Then rinse and spread conditioner on the outside layer of hair and the hair at the nape of your neck. Gently comb tangles out with your fingers or a wide toothed comb and rinse. Do not brush/comb your hair after this point because it wil disturb the curl pattern (make sure you already have a part). It is also important to use gel on sopping wet hair and scrunch the hair. Then let your hair air dry or wait ten minutes and then use a blowdryer with a diffuser. Do not touch the hair while it is air drying or it will frizz!
- Use a moisturizing conditioner, such as Desert Essence Organics Italian Red Grape Conditioner (found at health food/oragnic stores). The combo of products that I use daily is Garnier Fuctis Sleek and Shine Leave In Cream, Herbal Essences Set Me UpGel, and Aussie Tizz No Frizz Gel, but there are more conditioners, gels, etc. on the websites.
- Your hair may seem worse at first, but it is just adjusting. This takes 2 to 4 weeks begin working. This is hard to do if you don't read the book, or at least visit the websites. Naturally curly hair can be beautiful! Hope this helps!
