Can I perm hair twisted instead of using Rods?

I love the way my hair looks after I use a little styling gel, and twist small sections before I curl with a curling iron.

Naturally, I have pretty straight hair, with some slight waves on the sides. I want to perm my hair but I do not want to use perm rods. Instead I was wondering if I could perm my hair using several small sections of "twists" meaning I twist my hair, and then use perm solution. Perhaps I could hold the hair twists with plastic clamps.

Would this work? Does anyone know a salon that uses this technique?

I never heard of doing it that way. I really think it will not come out they way you want it. I suggest you use the perm rods or go to the salon and tell them what you are trying to achieve and they can tell you exactly what you need to do.
