My hair is thick curly and ....?

i want it to lie down but it sticks up in almost an afro style when it gets long, is there any way to get it to lie down (gel doesnt work) as i want long hair, any ideas?

After you take a shower, you can blow dry your hair straight using a rounded brush. I like to use some straightening gel (it's heat activated) so if I blow dry, or use a combination blow drying/straight iron I have a nice thin look. I have think and frizzy hair and I live in a very humid city.

I think women do something called "ironing". I think this actually involves a hot iron, but I am not sure. I also do not know how complicated it is or how long it lasts.
